The Directorate Renewable Energy in the DME
has finalised the White Paper on Renewable Energy (RE). This
Paper reflects a renewable energy tar-get of 10 000 GWh (0.8
Mtoe) by 2013, to be produced mainly from biomass, wind, solar
and small-scale hydro. |

South Africa is well endowed with renewable
energy resources. However, less than 1% of the total electricity
generated in South Africa is based on renewable energy. Renewable
energy resources in South Africa include biomass, hydro, solar,
wind and wave power. The theoretical potential for renewable
energy corresponds to approximately 50% of the present national
electricity production. |

File size 266KB |
The overall objective of this study is to identify
and describe the present utilisation of different wind energy
technologies in South Africa, to give an overview of industrial,
agricultural and R&D activities related to the utilisation
of wind energy in South Africa and the background for assessing
the impacts of the wind energy sector on the social and economic
development. |

South Africa would benefit significantly
were focus to be placed on energy efficiency. Benefit would
be realized in several areas including health, fiscal, environmental
and employment. It would also help to relieve the shortage
of electricity generating capacity that she will soon be facing.
Government encouragement of energy efficiency will assist
greatly in promoting energy efficiency. This could occur through
the implementing of equipment and building standards, fiscal
policies, efficiency targets and agreements, the carrying
out of audits and assessments, information dissemination programmes
and research and development activities. |

The Baseline Study on Hydropower in South Africa
(BSHSA) emanated from cooperative projects on issues of capacity
building in energy efficiency and renewable energy funded
in South Africa by the DME and DANIDA (DANCED). The findings
and conclusion derived from the BSHSA are based on a desk
study level investigation conducted by Cowi A/S Consultants
and a South African sub-consultant during the period between
June and September 2002. |
